thrive

I have been broken enough times
to know the smell of the earth
to know how gracious she is
to know her warmth
now, I am cut into ribbons no more
I am stronger than before
these are not the wings they thrust upon me
these are instead the ones I willed to grow
not for the mere fight nor for the war to thrive
but for the eminence of independence
for the austerity of freedom
it’s the faith rising from unanswered prayers
of the soil and the spirit, it leaves behind
and the day I gain the virtue of my existence
the day I defeat the insignificance of being
they may not know how I lived
but they will remember that I did
I was given a life not just to survive
I claimed this life to thrive
